Lakshmi
Goddess Lakshmi Is the consort of Lord Vishnu. It is she who manifest all of creation. She represents the physical universe in it’s entirety. As such she is the Goddess of wealth, luxury, beauty and love. It is her grace that is sought the most of all the Gods and Goddesses, for it is she who makes life pleasurable and enjoyable. Whereas Vishnu represents the archetypal masculine, she is the archetypal feminine. She is usually depicted standing or seated on a large lotus flower and she is enchantingly beautiful. She is usually shown with 4 arms, usually lotus flowers in 2 hands, often times with 1 hand dispensing gold the other making the open hand gesture of peace. She is usually adorned with a Lotus garland and much gold finery as well. We will often see her with Elephants in the background emptying pitchers of water near her, symbolic of the deep waters of truth which are always present but not seen at first. In these depictions she is usually seated on a lotus floating is in the water itself. According to myth, she was born as the daughter of the sage Bhrigu (Venus) and his wife Khyati. She was later born out of the ocean of milk while it was being churned to obtain the immortal nectar. For it is she who apportions the amrita (the nectar of bliss and eternal life) to us all. As consort of lord Vishnu, she is born whenever he incarnates. She is Sita, Vishnu is Ram. She is Rukmini he is Krisna. She is inseparable from Vishnu as light is from fire or wetness from water. For although Lakshmi has the entire wealth of universe at her command, she wants nothing but to be at the breast of lord Vishnu. In this way she is the universal force of love that is transcendent in the universe and in our nature’s as well. All of the pleasure, wealth and luxury are meaningless with out the peace of mind that accompanies love and devotion. Lakshmi and Vishnu are the Gods of Peace. Theirs is a gentle, parental influence that maintains this physical realm for all creatures to learn the highest truth. Lakshmi is also the ruler of all devotional practices that transform the emotions and desires in their highest form, a devotion that frees us from karma and unhappiness, not a desire that binds us further to it.
